Banner Saga

I actually played this game very long ago, so many this review won't be the best, but I'll do what I can with the depths of my memories of this game...while scrolling through Let's Players to jog my memory.

I think the game is ... ok.

I remember itching for a tactics game, since I grew up loving them and I don't really have the time for something like Disgaea. Banner Saga seems good to be because it is driven by story and stories have (hopefully) an end.

The game felt very aesthetics-first. It is clear to me that the story and art drives the game more than anything else. The developers clearly want to express the idea of a caravan, making decisions as the caravan master, and a feeling of hope amisdst despair.

I wish that the mechanics they implemented to express the aesthetics they want are little deeper. It felt too simple and lackluster. It felt like I'm playing with simple numbers. The combat is simple. The leveling system is simple. The caravan system is simple. The caravan resource system is simple...it felt like they are afraid of players breaking any structure in their game.

Not that I didn't enjoy the game...it's just...okay.

Yeah.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's much to comment about their aesthetics, which is their selling point. The story was okay. The art is okay. The 'harsh decisions' I have to make are okay. The character development is okay (yeah there were some sad deaths but...okay).

Really, the only interesting thing I felt was that my decisions in battle carry over, in the sense that if a character is too injured, I can't use them in the next battle so I have a plan a little but...

Yeah.

Solid 6 out of 10.
